Wedding Gowns and Garters

Blue was a traditional symbol of purity, so white wedding dresses were not particularly in vogue during the Renaissance. A band of blue ribbon would often be worn by the bride and groom, and where we get the part of the traditional rhyme where the bride should wear "something blue". Bridal dresses could have been any color.

Garters became one of the most important accessories of a Renaissance bride's wardrobe. Guests would follow the couple back to their room, and try to grab the garter for good luck. Before this, overzealous wedding guests would try and grab any part of the bride's clothing. Tradition held that a man who gave his love a bride's garter would be guaranteed faithfulness.
